A Beauty of the Beast.
Random and inconclusive thoughts while walking on the beach. Inspired by the view of the might.
I spent 12 years in the Navy and aircraft carriers always fascinated me. Today I see what I believe is a nuclear aircraft carrier George Washington (CVN 73) in the front of my house.
If you are inside the battleship it can feel claustrophobic (especially I hated submarines) , but aircraft carriers are the exception. When there is no air crew activities I used to be able to do long runs on a flight deck, get fresh air and it helped to return to a small cabin satisfied. Then when it was stormy and many crew members could not get from their bunks being sea-sick I could indulge in lavish dinners enjoying their portions.
It was in the last century. I think things are better now in terms of the crew space. And probably ship stability.
Being inside a nice piece of technology is different compared to seeing it from the outside. The latest Boeing might look nice from the outside, but if you are in economy for 10 or so hours, it is far from a pleasure. Navy combatant is pretty much so, except for a deck (not necessarily aircraft carrier) where you can sun bake and get fresh air, but not supposed to. Missions in the sea last for months, my longest was 9 months with occasional port calls to Djibouti, Port Louis and the likes.
So, kudos to the guys inside the CVN 73 supposed they still support the “values of democracy”.

My another thought is that the sea is the most powerful of The Three Bigs making the planet : ocean, air , land. Tsunamis destroy lands stronger than tornadoes, although earthquakes can be equally devastating. But ocean is bigger. 70% of the earth. Interestingly , it is similar to the human body which is roughly 60% water.
So, naturally, aircraft carriers are one of the must powerful weapons. Or deterrents. Hope the owners will make the right decisions even with the current “real estate” administration which still feels unreal. And aircraft carriers of US Navy will continue to carry the confidence of the past. Not only the equipment.
And I will continue my runs on the beach. Instead of a flight deck.
I'll take the sea over the mountains every day.
