Today is not so sunny, even I felt cold after a long swim.
I noticed that today Fuji really decided to show off. Donning last streaks of Her Majesty’s snow hat.
It is Saturday. People stop and take pictures. People sit and quietly gaze. People raise glasses or cans to celebrate the view. Silently or loudly. I also sat down and thought why do we people are attracted to such views? Of a beautiful scenery enhanced by a powerful mountain. It is not only Fuji. People gaze at the oceans, wats/temples/shrines and stars.
I think it is mostly about eternity. Subconsciously or knowingly humans long for it. From one human life perspective Fuji is for ever, they are not. Fuji is demanding nothing, it is calm and confident. By looking at it you get a small shot of its calmness, confidence and stability. You know that you are not for ever, but at the moment you feel part of the Fuji eternity. Although it might disappear one day, it is comfortable to believe that Fuji is for ever and drink some energy from the view. While we can.
Have to admit that views of Fuji are often so compelling that you simply have to stand and stare, it unfailingly has that effect on me, even if on a speeding shinkansen ! Incidentally, there used to be a place in Tokyo called Fujimi-zaka (Fuji viewing slope), near JR Nippori where a good view of the mountain could be had - not sure if that's still the case anymore !
Very true. We need to be reassured from time to time. Or all the time. Be it by God, Fuji or the ocean...
